Can You Call Yourself A Songwriter?

I am a songwriter.

10 years ago I would’ve felt embarrassed to say that, even though I have been writing songs since I was in 5th grade.

I didn’t feel qualified. I didn’t feel confident. I felt insecure.

Honestly, living in Nashville, I still have all those thoughts and feelings at least once a week. Often, I still feel a bit embarrassed calling myself a songwriter because frankly, most of the songs I’ve written are still just saved in a secure location in my Dropbox and haven’t been seen or heard by anyone else. I don’t have many cuts or many songs being used in churches. I certainly don’t have any #1 hits.

However, I keep writing. I still work hard at the craft. I still love to get together with friends to co-write.

Why? Because it’s a passion of mine.

Sure, it would be nice to see my songs being used in churches or heard on radio, but at the end of the days, I write because I love to write, not because I’m trying to become “successful” as a songwriter.

You see, how I approach songwriting and being a songwriter dramatically changed about 3 years ago. I hosted this event called the Hymnish Retreat. What initially was a simple idea for a worship songwriting retreat turned into a life-changing event for many of us there, including myself. With the help of my good friend, Michael Farren, the retreat consisted of several workshops, opportunities to build friendships with other writers, and also a chance to write with some of the best pro writers of our time.

This unique retreat gave us a new perspective on being a songwriter. It gave us confidence and a newfound passion to write songs. It gave us the opportunity to be face-to-face with pro writers who told us: “Keep on writing!” “Don’t get discouraged!” “I’m just like you!”

Well, after a 3 year hiatus, we are back at it again! April 30th - May 2nd, we are hosting the Kingdom Songs Retreat in Franklin, TN!

If you’re feeling discouraged as a songwriter…

If you feel like you lack confidence as a songwriter…

If you’re looking for new friends who also love to write…

If you’re serious about growing as a writer...

If you want to experience what it’s like to write with a pro writer…

I invite you to join us for the Kingdom Songs Retreat! I don’t know of any other retreat or event for Christian songwriters that offers all that we offer, or has an impressive lineup of speakers and pro writers like we do: Michael Farren, Jennie Lee Riddle, Tony Wood, James Tealy, Krissy Nordhoff, Dustin Smith, Matt Armstrong, Travis Ryan, Chad Cates, and many others!

I believe this retreat will change the way you approach songwriting and the way you see yourself as a writer.
